Match Report

WELL DONE LADS!

Shildon AFC lifted the Durham Challenge Cup for the first time since 1972 on Friday 18th April 2014. Playing at Billingham Synthonia’s ground, in front of a crowd of over 1,000 the Railwaymen came from behind to beat league favourites Spennymoor Town 2 – 1.

Early on, Shildon missed two good chances to take the lead. First Ben Wood’s shot was well blocked by Moor’s keeper Kyle Hayes, then on 10 minutes a through ball found Billy Greulich-Smith but he fired just wide.

Moors slowly got into the game with No 8 Keith Graydon controlling the midfield. A Chris Mason header was saved by Shildon Keeper Lewis Graham before Moors took the lead on 42 minutes when star man Keith Graydon picked up a half clearance from a corner and volleyed into the bottom corner of the net from 25 yards.

Half Time:  Shildon AFC  0  Spennymoor Town  1

From the kick off Shildon thought they had levelled when Ben Wood fired in from close range but he was judged to be off-side. Shildon piled on the pressure and had another goal disallowed for hand ball.

At the other end, Moors Liam Henderson and Andy Johnson both missed chances and on 73 minutes captain Chris Mason saw his shot hit the post.

With 7 minutes remaining Shildon’s Jamie Harwood crossed perfectly for Billy Greulich-Smith to head in at the far post for the equaliser. The Railwaymen kept the pressure going and in the first minute of time added on they got the winner when Ben Wood fired a brilliant cross from the right for Billy Greulich-Smith to force the ball home.
